The Waterloo Wellington Research Ethics Board (WWREB) makes sure that research done with people, their personal information, or body samples is safe and fair.

This includes research at Waterloo Regional Health Network (WRHN) and Cambridge Memorial Hospital. Before starting any research at these places, you must get approval from WWREB, unless another approved board has already reviewed it (like the Ontario Cancer Research Ethics Board).

Starting a Research Study

Before WWREB reviews your study, it must be checked by the hospital where you want to do the research. Send your full application to the hospital’s research office first. After they approve it, they will send it to WWREB.

Check the Submission Checklist to make sure you include everything needed.

Each hospital has its own schedule for reviewing studies. Contact the hospital’s research office to find out their deadlines:

How Research Proposals Are Reviewed

Before you can start a research project, it has to go through two important steps:

  1. Research Committee Review and Approval
  2. Research Ethics Board (REB) Review and Approval

First, your project must be approved by the WRHN Research Committee. This is called administrative approval. Once you get this approval, your project can be sent to the Research Ethics Board for the second review.

  • If your research does not involve people, you don’t need to send it to the Ethics Board.
  • If your project will be reviewed by the Waterloo Wellington Research Ethics Board (WWREB), the WRHN Research Committee will meet around the same time as WWREB.
  • These meetings happen in back-to-back months.

University of Waterloo Researchers

University of Waterloo researchers wishing to conduct research at any of the institutions must undergo a coordinated ethics review process. More details can be found through the University of Waterloo’s Research Department.

WRHN Research Committee & WWREB Schedule
